Siam Reap - Part Duex

There is so much else to do in Siam Reap, which you might miss out on, if you just obsess about the temples. And yes, that would be such a waste.

A good hour on the road, and there is Tonle Sap - the largest lake in south-east asia. It actually stretches all the way from Siam Reap to Phnom Penh. The monsoons swell the lake 4 times its original volume, and the floating villages start moving inwards. Floating homes, floating shops, floating schools. A boat ride on Tonle Sap is a very pretty and very khmer experience. Having a boat to just the two of ourselves, was of course very decadent.

Shopping deserves a mention for sure. Cambodian silk scarves, stoles, shawls. I bought 5, and regret not buying more. Paintings of Buddha, books, jewellery. A bit of bargain-shopping and a bit of boutique shopping. But me got some very beautiful silk tops, embroidered shawls and a huge red pendant. I wish there was space and money for more. Sigh, next time.

Khmer food deserves a special mention... it is a cross between vietnamese and thai food. We had loads of amok chicken (served in coconut shells) and deep-fried sinful spring rolls. Yummmy! It would be a sin not to try local food while in Cambodia. If one lands up at Pub Street, Khmer Kitchen seems a very popular place to eat there.

3 days are never enough for a place. But then one has to leave, no?

I am ready to return to Cambodia - let me know when you want to go :)
